Kazakhstan’s Almaty Half Marathon turns fatal for two experienced runners
Tragedy struck Kazakhstan's Almaty Half Marathon as two experienced runners — 84-year-old Akkoyan Rsaliyev and 21-year-old Nurbol Ahmadi — died during the race.
According to the “Courage to Be First” Foundation, which organized the event, both runners collapsed on the course despite immediate medical response, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Emergency teams and police arrived swiftly, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Rsaliyev, a regular participant in Almaty races since 2021, collapsed during the first kilometer on Al-Farabi Avenue.
The doctor cited pulmonary embolism and chronic hypertension as the preliminary cause of death. Akhmadi, who had competed in previous races including the Winter Run 2025, lost consciousness at the 16-kilometer mark. He could not be revived before emergency services arrived. The doctor cited pulmonary embolism and acute heart failure as a likely cause.
The foundation expressed condolences and confirmed that it is in contact with both families, with plans to provide financial support. Executive Director Saltanat Kazybayeva stressed that runner safety is the organizers’ top priority, noting that all participants sign a waiver confirming their fitness and personal responsibility — a standard in global race events.
“We regularly offer free training and educational sessions on safe running,” she added. “Every race route is carefully planned in cooperation with police and emergency services.”
Almaty Half Marathon 2025 is an annual running event featuring a 21.1 km half marathon, a 10 km race, and a 10 km Nordic walking course. Set against the backdrop of Almaty's blooming spring streets, this scenic race welcomes 10,000 participants from over 20 countries, all united by their shared passion for running.
