Kenyan MP shot to death in premeditated attack PHOTO

01 May 2025 10:49

Member of Kenyan Parliament Charles Were was fatally shot on the evening of April 30 in what authorities are calling a targeted and premeditated attack, according to a statement released by the local National Police Service (NPS).

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout. Eyewitnesses reported that a white Toyota Crown had stopped at a traffic light when it was approached by two individuals on a motorcycle. The pillion passenger is said to have disembarked, walked to the car’s passenger side, and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene with the rider, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The MP, who sustained critical injuries, was immediately rushed to Nairobi Hospital by the vehicle's driver and another passenger—both of whom escaped unharmed. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Charles Were was pronounced dead on arrival. Hospital staff later confirmed his identity as the sitting legislator for the Kasipul constituency.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, the Office of the Inspector General of Police condemned the killing, describing it as a "heinous and senseless crime." The NPS extended its condolences to the MP’s family, constituents, colleagues in Parliament, and close associates.

Senior police officers and forensic investigators have since been deployed to the scene to gather evidence and determine the motive behind the brazen attack.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue, and appealed for anyone with relevant information to come forward. No arrests had been made as of the time of publication.

Charles Were was serving his first term as MP and was known for his advocacy on community development and education reform in Homa Bay County.
