King Charles III responds to brother Andrew’s arrest “The law must take its course”

19 February 2026 17:27

King Charles III has issued a statement following the arrest of his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The King said he learned “with the deepest concern” of the news and affirmed that the palace would give the investigation its “full and wholehearted support and co‑operation,” Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Buckingham Palace indicated that neither King Charles nor senior officials were given advance warning of the arrest.

“Let me state clearly: the law must take its course,” the statement added. “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who turned 66 today, was arrested at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate. He had been residing there temporarily following his eviction from Royal Lodge, Windsor, after King Charles stripped him of his Princely title last year.

Thames Valley Police confirmed searches were being carried out at both Wood Farm and Royal Lodge, and that Andrew remains in custody at an undisclosed location.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said the investigation had been opened after a “thorough assessment” and emphasised the need to maintain the integrity and objectivity of the inquiry.

Despite the arrest, senior royals have maintained their official engagements. Queen Camilla continued with a Westminster engagement, while King Charles and other family members visited Barking and Dagenham to meet local organisations. Prince William announced the Earthshot Prize would head to Mumbai, and Princess Anne carried out investitures at Windsor Castle.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is the third child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the younger brother of King Charles and Princess Anne.
