Klaipėda Port deploys drone detection system for real-time airspace monitoring

04 May 2026 13:10

Klaipėda Port has introduced a new drone detection system aimed at enhancing airspace monitoring and reinforcing the security of one of Lithuania’s key strategic infrastructure assets, the Port Authority has said.

According to the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, the system is expected to enable faster identification of potential aerial threats and improve overall situational awareness within the port area, Caliber.Az reports via Lithuanian media.

“Taking into account the evolving security environment, we are strengthening the protection of Klaipėda Port infrastructure. The new drone detection system will allow us to monitor the port’s airspace more effectively, quickly identify threats, and ensure the security of a strategic asset,” the Transport Minister Juras Taminskas was quoted as saying in an official statement.

The system, which has been introduced through a leasing agreement with Estonian technology company HexTech Solutions OÜ, enables real-time monitoring of drone activity within the port’s operational zone. It can detect unauthorised or potentially risky flights and identify both the drone and its operator’s location.

Authorities say the platform provides detailed information on detected drones, including manufacturer and model, geographic coordinates, unique identifiers, flight altitude, and any breaches of restricted zones or altitude limits.

Historical data will also be stored, allowing for incident analysis, tracking of repeated activity patterns, and preparation of security reports. Officials stressed that the system operates without disrupting existing communications, navigation, or other technological infrastructure.

The Port Authority said the new capability complements existing security measures and further strengthens protection across the port area. Klaipėda Port already operates under a multi-layered security framework involving cooperation between the Port Authority, the Lithuanian Armed Forces, public security services, and the State Border Guard Service.

Additional measures include physical barriers, controlled access to terminals, and extensive CCTV surveillance. The entire port zone has also been designated as a no-fly area.

Authorities added that preparedness for emergencies is continually improving. Last year, the Port Authority participated in 14 drills conducted jointly with the military, municipal bodies, state agencies, and port operators.
