Kremlin: Diplomatic efforts with Washington stand apart from Ukraine negotiations

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has clarified that the process of restoring diplomatic dialogue between Russia and the United States is unfolding independently of the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters, Peskov emphasized that Moscow is actively working to re-establish communication channels with Washington, but stressed that this track is entirely separate from negotiations or developments related to Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

“We are now engaged in restoring our relations with Washington, establishing dialogue, while the Ukrainian settlement and ensuring our national interests are a different process. They do not depend on each other,” Peskov stated in response to a question regarding the Kremlin’s current diplomatic priorities.

The warming of relations between Russia and the United States became evident following the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States in January 2025. However, Peskov has consistently emphasized that it is premature to discuss the full restoration of dialogue between the two nations.

In late February, Peskov specifically differentiated between the ongoing diplomatic discussions and the potential for cooperation in the field of technological development. He highlighted that, as of yet, such collaboration has not materialized.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also addressed the evolving relationship between Russia and the US, stating that if there is a genuine desire, "everything can be done." He further emphasized that Russia has not lost this desire to improve ties with the United States.
