Kyiv, Cairo step up dialogue on Black Sea security

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty discussed security and freedom of navigation in the Black Sea during a phone call, as Kyiv seeks to strengthen dialogue with partners in the region.

Sybiha briefed Abdelatty on the latest developments on the battlefield and Ukraine’s efforts to achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

The two ministers also discussed freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and its implications for global food security. Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine remains a reliable supplier of food to international markets.

The talks also covered the evolving situation in the Middle East, with the ministers exchanging views on regional developments.

Sybiha and Abdelatty agreed to maintain regular contacts and continue bilateral dialogue, the ministry said.

In the first half of 2026, Ukrainian seaports handled 42.4 million tons of cargo despite Russian attacks, which intensified in July. However, on July 23, inbound vessel traffic to Ukraine's Black Sea ports was suspended due to the threat of Russian attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia is trying to completely block Ukraine's maritime corridor in the Black Sea, but several ships are still entering and leaving Odesa's ports every day.
