Kyrgyz MFA warns citizens: Iran’s land borders with Pakistan and Azerbaijan closed

16 January 2026 11:10

The Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a notice to citizens, stating that Iran’s land borders with Pakistan and Azerbaijan are currently closed.

In its announcement, the Ministry informed Kyrgyz citizens who are presently in Iran, as well as those planning to travel to or depart from the country, of the following:

“At present, most international airlines have reduced or temporarily suspended flights to and from Iran, and frequent changes to flight schedules are being observed. If departure by air transport is not possible, exit by land through the territories of neighbouring states is possible.

Entry into Armenia and Türkiye for citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic is carried out without the need to obtain visas.

To enter Turkmenistan, it is necessary to contact the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in that country in advance for assistance in obtaining permission to enter and a transit visa.

As of 16 January 2026, border crossing points on Iran’s state border with Afghanistan and Iraq remain open. If a decision is made to enter those countries, it is necessary to apply in advance for visas at the relevant diplomatic missions.”

The Ministry emphasised that citizens should also consider alternative options for leaving Iran, as “Iran’s land borders with Pakistan and Azerbaijan are currently closed for crossing.”

Kyrgyz nationals who require assistance in departing Iran are advised to contact the embassy or the MFA’s consular department and provide the following information:

— their surname, first name, patronymic, and contact details;
— a photograph of the passport page containing biographical data;
— the intended point of border crossing.

The Ministry further recommends that citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic who are planning to visit Iran in the near future refrain from doing so until the situation has fully stabilised.
