Kyrgyzstan President Japarov to seek second term
14 August 2026 10:07
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov plans to seek a second term in office, his press secretary, Askat Alagozov, said on August 11.
Alagozov said Japarov’s participation in the next presidential election would be consistent with the government’s long-term plans for major strategic projects and national development, Caliber.Az reports per Kyrgyz media.
Japarov was elected president in January 2021 after a period of political unrest that brought him to power in late 2020. He has since strengthened the powers of the presidency under Kyrgyzstan’s 2021 Constitution.
Under the current Constitution, the president can serve up to two five-year terms. The next presidential election is scheduled for January 2027, rather than 2026.
