Laser warfare: France’s HELMA-LP may be key to Ukraine’s defence strategy VIDEO

20 May 2025 01:19

According to a new article, Euromaidan Press features that French defense company CILAS has introduced a cutting-edge portable laser rifle, the HELMA-LP, which could play a pivotal role on future battlefields. This new weapon is especially relevant for Ukraine, as it faces an ongoing invasion from Russia and an escalating need for advanced, adaptable defense technologies.

The HELMA-LP was revealed at the 7th SOFINS (Special Operations Forces Innovation Network Seminar) exhibition, showcasing an evolution of the HELMA-P high-energy laser system. The original HELMA-P was designed to neutralise airborne threats like drones and has already seen deployment, including during the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, the HELMA-LP’s compact, rifle-like design sets it apart, offering portability and the ability to discreetly target and disable ground-based equipment.

Ukraine, embroiled in its defence against Russia's full-scale invasion, could greatly benefit from the HELMA-LP. Unlike traditional long-range laser weapons, the HELMA-LP is optimised for close-to-medium-range operations. It is ideal for targeting electronics, sensors, surveillance devices, and camouflaged military assets. With an effective range of at least 500 meters and a precise beam diameter of about 20 mm, the system can neutralise small, stationary targets with remarkable accuracy.

Ukrainian defence analysts at Defense Express suggest that while the HELMA-LP has not been explicitly marketed for anti-drone use, its power could likely disable drone optics or melt plastic filters, making it a valuable tool against FPV drones and quadcopters frequently used by Russian forces for reconnaissance and psychological warfare.

The HELMA-LP could serve as a powerful countermeasure against electronic warfare, provide stealthy disruption on the battlefield, offer psychological advantages, and enable precision strikes with minimal collateral damage. Its modular design also makes it compatible with drones, enhancing Ukraine’s growing unmanned warfare capabilities.

While it's uncertain whether Ukraine will secure the HELMA-LP or develop a similar system domestically, this innovative weapon could offer significant strategic advantages in the increasingly digital, drone-driven warfare environment.
