Media: France ready to help secure Saudi energy infrastructure

France is ready to contribute to the security of Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure targeted by the Iran-backed Houthi movement, including facilities in Yanbu and along the East-West Pipeline, AFP reported, citing a diplomatic source.

The source said Paris intended to adopt a “strictly defensive approach” in providing the support.

“France is ready to contribute to securing Saudi energy infrastructure in Yanbu and along the East-West Pipeline, within the framework of a strictly defensive approach,” the source said.

The source also stressed that “this in no way involves taking part in the conflict with the Houthis.”

The development comes amid a recent escalation in the conflict involving the Houthis and the internationally recognised Yemeni government. The Houthis have carried out attacks against facilities belonging to Saudi oil giant Saudi Aramco in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu.

The East-West Pipeline, a crucial route for transporting Saudi crude to the Red Sea coast, was also shut down after drone attacks originating from Iraq, according to Saudi authorities. Riyadh has increased its reliance on the route as it seeks to maintain oil exports amid disruptions in the wider region.

On September 18, Saudi Aramco notified European refineries that it would suspend crude oil deliveries in October, according to the source cited by Kommersant.

France’s announcement comes as Paris seeks to strengthen regional energy security amid disruptions affecting key oil-export routes. French President Emmanuel Macron has also discussed measures to protect energy infrastructure and maintain the flow of oil and other energy supplies during talks in New York.
