Latvian Parliament to consider application recognising Russia as terrorist state
The Foreign Affairs Commission of the Saeima (Parliament) of Latvia will consider an application to recognise Russia as a terrorist state due to the war it is waging in Ukraine.
The announcement came online by Rihards Kols, Chairman of the Latvia Parliament’s Commission for Foreign Affairs on August 1, according to the Latvian newspaper TV Net.
The commission’s meeting is scheduled for August 2 in a remote format.
Earlier, the US Senate called on the State Department to recognise Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism due to the country's actions in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, and Ukraine. Meanwhile, Syria, Cuba, North Korea, and Iran are now on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, which allows the US to impose additional sanctions. Officials in Ukraine asked for recognition of the same status for Russia.
