Poland’s employment outlook darkens with tens of thousands of jobs slashed

13 August 2025 14:41

Polish companies are bracing for an unprecedented wave of job eliminations, with an estimated 80,000 positions expected to be cut by the end of this year.

This figure marks a staggering increase, doubling the number of layoffs projected for 2024 and surpassing the workforce reductions seen in 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The anticipated surge in job losses highlights significant structural challenges within Poland’s labor market, with the chemical industry and transport sectors identified as the hardest hit. Industrial experts warn that these cuts reflect broader economic pressures and ongoing efforts to streamline operations amid evolving market conditions.

In a notable development, PKP Cargo, Poland’s largest freight carrier, announced plans to dismiss 765 employees by September 30 as part of a comprehensive company reorganisation. The move underscores the transport sector’s vulnerability, as businesses seek to enhance efficiency in the face of shifting demand patterns and financial constraints.
