Latvian PM: Ukraine’s EU membership could strengthen access to key resources

27 June 2026 11:42

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has said that Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union could help the bloc gain access to important natural resources, while strengthening mutual economic cooperation.

In an interview with Polish broadcaster TVP WORLD, Kulbergs said Ukraine holds “vast resources” that could contribute to addressing shortages within the European Union, particularly in sectors reliant on critical raw materials.

He added that the EU is currently facing resource constraints and would benefit from closer cooperation with Ukraine in the extraction and supply of minerals essential for industry.

Kulbergs emphasised that his remarks referred to a partnership model based on mutual benefit, rather than one-sided exploitation.
