Lebanon central bank governor arrives in Washington

The Governor of Lebanon’s central bank, Karim Saeed, has travelled to the United States for meetings with officials from the U.S. Treasury Department.

The Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar reported that the visit is focused on financial discussions, including a request for a loan or guarantees related to U.S. bonds held by the Central Bank of Lebanon in its foreign investment portfolio.

The publication noted that any approval at this level would be largely political in nature.

It also said the timing of Saeed’s visit coincides with ongoing talks in Washington involving Lebanese and Israeli representatives, held with U.S. officials. The newspaper suggested the overlap was “no coincidence,” though no official link between the two developments has been confirmed.
