Legal cooperation in focus as Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General visits China PHOTO

13 April 2026 17:18

Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev has kicked off an official visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Ying Yong, to strengthen legal cooperation between the two nations.

A delegation led by Aliyev arrived in Shanghai, where it was received by Ying Yong, Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate of China, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office.

Welcoming the delegation, Ying highlighted that Azerbaijan and China are strategic partners, pointing to the steady development of cooperation across multiple sectors. He praised the growing ties between the prosecutorial bodies of the two countries and recalled previous visits by Azerbaijani delegations. Ying also emphasized that the bilateral agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters would further strengthen cooperation between the two legal systems.

Aliyev, for his part, thanked the Chinese side for its warm reception and hospitality, noting that China has consistently supported Azerbaijan’s political initiatives on international platforms. He said bilateral relations have advanced significantly in recent years, reaching the level of a strategic partnership due to the political will and efforts of both countries’ leadership.

He cited Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s two visits to China last year, along with regular high-level engagements and the signing of the “Joint Statement on the Establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Republic of China” by President Ilham Aliyev and Chinese President Xi Jinping in April.

Aliyev said these developments have contributed to strengthening cooperation between the prosecutorial authorities of both countries, including active exchanges of experience. He noted that a large delegation from China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate took part in the General Conference and Annual Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors held in Baku in 2024, while Azerbaijani prosecutors also completed a long-term training program in China last year.

During the visit, the sides discussed efforts to combat various forms of crime, practical aspects of cooperation, and opportunities to expand legal and institutional ties. This includes the involvement of Azerbaijani prosecutors in higher education institutions in China, with relevant agreements reached.

Aliyev also invited his Chinese counterpart to visit Azerbaijan to further strengthen bilateral relations. The visit is ongoing, with several meetings scheduled.
