Legendary European football club targets €98 million by with major squad overhaul

One of Europe's most respected football clubs is preparing for a major squad overhaul, with AC Milan new head coach placing six players on the transfer list as he looks to reshape the team according to his vision.

Ruben Amorim, the Portuguese coach who previously managed Manchester United, is seeking to raise nearly €98 million by offloading several key names, as sports media outlets report, including Christopher Nkunku, Fikayo Tomori and Youssouf Fofana.

The transfer list was reportedly drawn up on August 13, barely two months after Amorim took charge of the Italian giants. The decision could see Milan part ways with players on whom the club invested heavily across recent transfer windows.

Tomori joined Milan from Chelsea on a permanent deal in 2021 for around €35 million, while Fofana arrived from Monaco in 2024 for approximately €26 million. Nkunku, the most recent of the three signings, was acquired for €37 million in 2025.

Together, Milan invested close to €98 million in the three players who are now reportedly available for transfer.

Amorim has also reportedly told the club's ownership that he needs between five and six new signings to build a squad better suited to his tactical approach.

Amorim arrived at Milan in June 2026, replacing Massimiliano Allegri after a season that left the club's hierarchy deeply dissatisfied.

The Portuguese coach had established his reputation during his successful spell at Sporting CP before taking over at Manchester United in a high-profile move.

Early signs of Amorim's plans for Milan emerged during a friendly against Chelsea, when both Tomori and Fofana were left on the bench. The decision was seen as a public indication that the two defenders were not central to the new manager's plans.

A meeting between Amorim and Milan owner Gerry Cardinale on August 13 reportedly formalised the decision, after which the club's transfer list was drawn up.

For Tomori in particular, the situation represents a significant reversal of fortunes.

The English defender was once regarded as a cornerstone of Milan's defence and played an important role in the club's 2022 Serie A title-winning campaign. His potential departure now reflects the extent of the changes Amorim intends to make to the squad.

Milan has been under American ownership since 2022, when investment firm RedBird Capital acquired the club from fellow US investment firm Elliott Investment Management in a deal reportedly worth €1.2 billion. The New York Yankees also acquired a minority stake in the club.

RedBird founder and managing partner Gerry Cardinale has repeatedly spoken about his ambition to build a competitive Milan side while maintaining financial discipline.

That approach could make player sales an important component of Amorim's rebuilding plans, potentially allowing the club to generate significant funds for the five or six new signings the coach reportedly wants.

If the reported departures materialise, Amorim's first transfer window at Milan could therefore mark the beginning of one of the club's most significant squad restructurings in recent years.
