Lithuania government led by Ruginienė set to resign next week

18 June 2026 13:48

The XX government of Lithuania, led by Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė, is expected to resign next Tuesday, 23 June, according to the news agency Delfi. The information was confirmed by the Prime Minister’s adviser, Ignas Dobrovolskas.

Ruginienė, a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (SDPL), was appointed prime minister in August last year. Her cabinet was sworn in by the Seimas in September.

The planned resignation comes amid a broader political reshuffle linked to the formation of a new governing coalition. SDPL leader Mindaugas Sinkevicius has announced that he intends to assume the role of prime minister in the next government.

In parallel, discussions are underway regarding a possible return of Ruginienė to her previous post as Minister of Social Security and Labour, though this has not been formally confirmed.

Coalition negotiations have recently resulted in an agreement on the distribution of ministries in the incoming government. Under the proposed arrangement, the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” is set to receive the agriculture, energy and health portfolios.

The SDPL is expected to retain control of nine ministries, while the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens and Christian Families Union would hold two.

A coalition agreement is expected to be signed later this week, outlining commitments to implement the programme of the XXI government approved by the Seimas.
