Lithuania hit by violent storms, tornadoes suspected PHOTO

Severe storms swept across Lithuania on the evening of June 5, with meteorologists reporting that at least three tornadoes may have formed during the event.

According to LRT, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service said the extreme weather system brought intense rainfall, thunderstorms, hail and strong, gusting winds. In some areas, wind speeds reached 15–16 metres per second, while rainfall totals locally exceeded 15 millimetres within a 12-hour period.

Videos circulating on social media showed powerful funnel clouds in Kaunas, the Ukmergė district and Kazlų Rūda, suggesting possible tornado activity.

In Kaunas, high winds caused significant damage to infrastructure. The roof of a building was torn off, while numerous trees were brought down across the city and surrounding areas. Energy provider ESO reported that approximately 8,000 customers were temporarily left without electricity.

Emergency services said they responded to 16 incidents linked to the storm’s последствия, all involving fallen trees blocking roads.

Meteorologists added that conditions remained unstable even after the storm system moved through, with rain and thunderstorms continuing overnight in several parts of the country.
