Lithuania to move emergency reserves further from Belarusian border
Lithuania plans to relocate its emergency stockpiles of food, fuel, and other essential goods from border regions to more central locations by 2027.
According to LRT, the National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC) announced the plan.
Aurimas Guščius, head of the NKVC Planning Bureau, said that the construction and design of the new storage facilities will take several years, but the relocation from high-risk areas will be completed by 2027. He added that around 60% of the reserves previously stored near the Belarusian border have already been moved.
“The civil protection reserves, managed by the Fire and Rescue Department, will be relocated once two new warehouses are built in central and northern Lithuania,” Guščius noted.
The state reserves are intended for use in emergencies, crises, mobilisation, or in the event of a state of emergency or war.
According to the State Audit Office, €12.6 million was spent on the accumulation and management of reserves between 2022 and 2025. The total value, type, quantity, and storage locations of the reserves are classified information.
