Lithuania weighs joining US-led Hormuz coalition

30 April 2026 15:00

Lithuania is considering joining a United States-led coalition aimed at restoring commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, President Gitanas Nausėda said.

According to LRT, Nausėda confirmed that Vilnius has received a formal proposal from Washington to take part in the initiative.

He said the matter will be submitted in the near future to Lithuania’s State Defence Council for review, while any decision to participate would also require approval from the Seimas of Lithuania.

Nausėda stressed that the potential mission would be peaceful in nature. “We are in solidarity and understand that we must not only demand and receive, but also contribute,” he said.

The Lithuanian president also expressed his view that Iran is “an active assistant of Russia in the aggressive war against Ukraine,” underscoring the importance of maintaining stability in the region.

The initiative comes as the United States works to assemble an international coalition to ensure the restoration of commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. According to media reports, the plan предусматривает coordination of actions among participating countries, information sharing, and oversight of sanctions enforcement.

The developments follow the outbreak of hostilities in Iran on February 28, triggered by airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
