Lithuanian leadership take shelter as drone alert triggers NATO scramble

20 May 2026 12:38

Lithuania’s top leadership was temporarily taken to a shelter amid concerns over a potential drone threat.

President Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene, and Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas were reportedly forced to move to a bunker following the alert, Delfi reports.

Earlier on May 20, NATO fighter jets were deployed across the airspace of the Baltic states as part of a regional patrol operation. The heightened security response followed the detection of a radar signal near Lithuania’s border, with characteristics consistent with a drone.

Authorities have not yet provided additional details regarding the origin or nature of the signal.
