Lithuanian parliament expands military powers
Lithuania’s parliament, the Seimas, on December 18 unanimously approved amendments granting additional powers to the military when assisting civilian authorities during a state of emergency. All 67 members present voted in favour, with no votes against or abstentions.
The legislative changes follow the declaration of a state of emergency on December 9, prompted by the arrival of smuggled airborne probes from neighbouring Belarus, Caliber.Az reports via LRT.
Under the new rules, military personnel supporting border guards and public security services are authorized to issue binding orders to individuals and legal entities, pursue and detain suspected violators, restrict access to designated areas, and inspect vehicles.
The expanded powers are valid for up to three months but may be extended repeatedly if authorities determine that the security situation requires continued measures.
Officials said the amendments are intended to strengthen the country’s ability to respond effectively to emerging threats and to ensure public safety during the ongoing emergency.
