Lithuanian PM resigns amid coalition reshuffle
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene has announced her resignation, triggering the formation of a new government following changes within the country’s ruling coalition.
Following her resignation on June 23, President Gitanas Nausėda now has 15 days to nominate a new candidate for prime minister. The nominee will then require approval from the Seimas, Lithuania’s parliament, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“Despite all the difficulties, we have much to be proud of—what we have accomplished for the good of the state and its people,” Ruginiene said. “Today, we are deciding to resign.”
The resignation comes after a reconfiguration of the governing coalition. Earlier in June, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party ended its cooperation with the “Dawn Over the Neman” party, accusing it of populist policies. It subsequently formed a new coalition with the “Democrats for Lithuania” party, with officials agreeing to “reset the government” as part of the political restructuring.
