Lithuanian politician accused of online harassment, insults
European Parliament member Dainius Žalimas has said he has filed a request with the Prosecutor General’s Office to launch a pre-trial investigation into the actions of Remigijus Žemaitaitis, leader of the Nemuno aušra party, over his insulting activity on social media.
Žalimas alleges that Žemaitaitis published an artificially generated image of a participant in a recent protest on Facebook and subsequently humiliated the individual publicly, making derogatory comments about him, Caliber.Az reports, citing Lithuanian media.
The MEP claims that his complaint asks prosecutors to assess possible elements of defamation and incitement to hatred.
Žalimas also stated that he intends to appeal to the parliamentary ethics and procedures commission and to initiate discussions on a possible impeachment process, citing alleged violations of constitutional duties and the humiliation of human dignity.
