London’s visa portal adds separate category for “northern part of Cyprus”

For the first time, the United Kingdom’s official visa application system has listed the “northern part of Cyprus” under a separate heading, marking an unexpected update to the British government’s online platform.

According to Türkiye Gazetesi, this development represents the first instance in which the “northern part of Cyprus” has been individually identified in a British administrative system. The UK government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the change.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) declared independence on November 15, 1983, following the division of the island after the 1974 conflict. However, it is recognised only by Türkiye. The United Nations and the broader international community consider the area part of the Republic of Cyprus. UN Security Council Resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984) declared the TRNC’s declaration of independence legally invalid and called on member states not to recognise it.

The United Kingdom, like most countries, does not recognise the TRNC and regards the Republic of Cyprus as the island’s sole sovereign authority. British consular support in Northern Cyprus remains limited, and documents issued by TRNC authorities, including residence permits, are not recognised by the Republic of Cyprus.

Despite the lack of international recognition, the TRNC continues to function with its own administrative, legal, and residency systems. It maintains efforts to expand its global recognition, with Türkiye serving as its only diplomatic ally.

The TRNC leadership continues to insist on the principle of “sovereign equality” as a fundamental condition for any potential negotiations on the reunification of Cyprus.
