Los Angeles declares state of emergency after major warehouse fire

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has declared a state of emergency following a large warehouse fire that triggered heavy smoke and environmental concerns across the city.

“While the LAFD [fire department] continues making progress, this is a major, multi-jurisdictional incident. I’m issuing an emergency declaration to ensure the City has the resources it needs as this operation continues and to keep the community safe,” she stated.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and use air purifiers where possible. Emergency shelters have been opened for those affected, providing drinking water and food.

The fire broke out on June 18 at a commercial warehouse in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles. The blaze involved solar panels, and a large column of black smoke was visible from several kilometers away.
