Louvre robbery: French police arrest new five suspects

30 October 2025 12:06

On October 29 evening, French police arrested five new suspects in the Louvre robbery case, French radio RTL reports, citing a law enforcement source.

The source said all five were detained “in various locations across the Paris region.”

It has not been clarified what exactly the detainees are suspected of, or whether they are connected to the two suspects who were formally charged on the evening of the same day for direct involvement in the museum robbery.

The massive jewellery heist at Louvre Museum in Paris unfolded on October 19, 2025, when a group of masked thieves executed a lightning‑fast raid on the Galerie d’Apollon, the gallery housing the remnants of France’s crown jewels.

At around 9:30 a.m.—just weeks after the museum opened to the public—the thieves accessed the building via its Seine‑facing façade, using a truck‑mounted aerial basket lift to reach a first‑floor window under cloak of ongoing construction work. They cut glass panes with angle‑grinders, smashed two display cases, and escaped on motor‑scooters—all within roughly four to seven minutes.

In total, eight historic jewellery pieces were confirmed stolen, including tiaras, necklaces and brooches once owned by Empress Eugénie and Empress Marie‑Louise, with speculated value in excess of €80–100 million. One item—the emerald‑and‑diamond crown of Empress Eugénie—was later found broken outside the museum.

In subsequent days investigators identified suspects: two men in their 30s, one French and one Algerian, were arrested—one attempting to board a flight abroad—while prosecutors indicated that over 100 investigators are involved and have not ruled out broader accomplices or an inside job.
