Macron and Trump hold "very constructive" talks on Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron said he had a “very constructive” conversation with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, with support for Ukraine among the issues discussed.

According to Le Figaro, Macron said the two presidents discussed “the need to provide even faster and more decisive assistance to our Ukrainian friends”, particularly regarding the supply of interceptor missiles.

The meeting came amid continued discussions among Western allies over support for Ukraine and efforts to increase pressure on Russia.

Ahead of the meeting, Le Figaro, citing sources, reported that Macron intended to engage Trump in a dialogue “with complete candour”.

According to sources cited by BFM TV, the French side viewed the meeting as an opportunity to “steer President Trump towards the right decisions”, including continuing efforts to support Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.

The talks took place as world leaders gathered in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
