Macron defends judicial independence in response to Le Pen case

02 April 2025 17:33

French President Emmanuel Macron, during a government meeting, reminded the public of the independence of the judiciary and the right of every individual to a fair trial.

Spokesperson for the French government, Sophie Prima, made the statement during a briefing in Paris, in response to a question about the President's reaction to the verdict in the case involving the leader of the parliamentary faction of the National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, regarding assistants in the European Parliament, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

"The President did not comment on the court's decision but reminded that, first of all, judges are independent in their decisions, and their rulings must be respected. Secondly, threats against judges are unacceptable," Prima noted.

According to her, Macron also emphasized that "everyone has the right to justice, and the law is the same for all."

Marine Le Pen, leader of France's far-right National Rally (RN), has recently faced significant legal challenges that have profound implications for her political future. On March 31, 2025, a Paris court convicted Le Pen and several associates for embezzling European Union funds allocated for parliamentary assistants. The court sentenced Le Pen to a five-year ban from public office, effectively barring her from the 2027 presidential election, along with a four-year prison term, two years of which are suspended, and a €100,000 fine.
