Macron: Iran should not have struck vessels in Strait of Hormuz
French President Emmanuel Macron has said Iran should not have carried out strikes on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that the attacks violated the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
Speaking at a press conference following the NATO summit in Türkiye, Macron said negotiations under the memorandum signed by the United States and Iran to resolve the conflict should continue despite the ceasefire violation, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He said the parties remained within the 60-day period set out by the memorandum and noted that, as he understood it, the meetings envisaged under the agreement would continue.
Macron stressed the need to move forward with “maximum calm, composure and patience”, adding that he would continue to advocate for peace and stability in the Middle East.
The French president also said efforts should be made to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz “without preconditions and tariffs”.
He separately highlighted the need to stabilise the situation in Lebanon, where Israeli forces are conducting a military operation, and called for negotiations to resolve disagreements over Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes.
