Macron discusses end to blockade in Strait of Hormuz with Pezeshkian
French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which the lifting of the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of full maritime navigation emerged as a key focus of discussion.
In a post on X, Macron expressed deep concern over the current escalation and condemned strikes on civilian infrastructure in the UAE as well as attacks on several vessels.
He stressed that all parties must immediately and unconditionally lift the blockade in the strait, calling for the restoration of the full freedom of navigation that existed before the conflict.

J’ai marqué ma vive préoccupation sur l'escalade en cours, et condamné les frappes injustifiées contre les infrastructures civiles émiriennes et plusieurs navires.
Toutes les parties doivent lever le blocus…
The French president noted that a multinational mission proposed by France and the United Kingdom could help rebuild confidence among shipowners and insurers, emphasising that it would differ in nature from the parties to the conflict. He added that the pre-deployment of the aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle” is linked to this broader context of maritime security.
“Recent events clearly demonstrate the usefulness of such a mission. I have invited the Iranian President to seize this opportunity, and I intend to discuss this matter with President Trump,” Macron said.
He concluded that restoring calm in the strait would contribute to advancing negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic issues, and regional stability, adding that European countries, which play a role in sanctions relief, would contribute to the process.
