Macron’s popularity falls to historic low of 18%

French President Emmanuel Macron’s popularity has fallen to a historic low, with just 18% of respondents saying they consider him a good president, according to a new poll.

The figure represents a seven-point drop since the end of June, according to the Odoxa-Mascaret poll for Public Sénat and the regional press.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has also seen his approval rating fall sharply, dropping eight points to 24%.

The poll was conducted online before Macron addressed the issue of fuel prices on TF1 and France 2 on September 24, BFMTV reports.

It found that 75% of respondents considered the government’s planned expansion of aid for “high-mileage drivers” insufficient. A further 62% said the government should spend more on the issue despite France’s budget deficit.

Among political figures involved in the presidential campaign, National Rally figures Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella remained the most supported, with 35% of respondents saying they supported or sympathised with the pair. Their figures nevertheless fell by four and five points respectively.

Former prime minister and Horizons candidate Édouard Philippe was on 27%, down three points, while former president François Hollande was on 22%, down one point.

Raphaël Glucksmann of Place publique recorded 20%, up one point.
