Macron signals NATO expansion to Asia if China fails to halt North Korean troops in Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a pointed warning to Chinese authorities regarding the presence of North Korean troops on European soil, suggesting that NATO could expand its operations into Asia if Beijing does not intervene.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue global security forum in Singapore, Macron underscored his longstanding opposition to NATO’s involvement in Asia, but indicated that recent developments could prompt a strategic shift, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

“During the past few years, I have objected to NATO having any role in Asia because, to me, N is for North Atlantic (meaning NATO should deployed solely in the North Atlantic region),” Macron stated.

He highlighted the emerging security challenge posed by North Korea’s alignment with Russia on European territory, describing it as “a big question for all of us.”

Macron’s remarks signal a potential recalibration of NATO’s geographic scope, contingent on China’s response to North Korea’s movements. “And this is why, if China doesn't want NATO being involved in Southeast Asia or Asia, they should clearly prevent the DPRK from engaging on European soil,” he added.

In June 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a visit to North Korea, during which he signed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and the DPRK. This treaty, ratified by the State Duma on October 24, encompasses 23 articles aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across a broad spectrum of areas, including trade, economic development, investment, scientific research, technological innovation, space exploration, and the peaceful use of atomic energy.
