Macron, Tusk to discuss defence, nuclear cooperation at Gdansk summit

French President Emmanuel Macron arrives in the Polish city of Gdańsk on April 20 for talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, aimed at deepening the bilateral treaty of friendship and cooperation between France and Poland.

The summit continues a series of agreements described in Warsaw as “historic and symbolic,” Caliber.Az reports via French media.

According to experts, it could strengthen Poland’s position as a key French partner in Eastern Europe and reinforce its role within Europe’s security architecture.

One of the central topics will be French nuclear deterrence. Macron has previously stated that France allows “deployment in special cases of elements of strategic forces among allies,” including Poland. This refers to a possible distributed demonstration of capabilities, although experts stress that no permanent deployment of French nuclear assets or submarines in the region is planned.

The French leader is also expected to discuss expanding allied participation in nuclear deterrence-related exercises, including joint scenarios and manoeuvres.

Defence cooperation and new contracts will also feature in the discussions. France may offer Poland projects in satellite communications and military technologies, including ammunition production, an area of strong interest for the Polish armed forces. In return, Warsaw is considering potential supplies of its own weapons systems.

Analysts note that the growing alignment between Paris and Warsaw carries not only defence but also political significance, including as a signal of potential diversification of security guarantees in Europe.
