Macron visits Poland for talks on security, defence, transatlantic ties

20 April 2026 17:05

French President Emmanuel Macron visited the Polish city of Gdańsk on April 20, where he met with Prime Minister Donald Tusk as part of an intergovernmental summit between the two countries.

The visit coincides with Polish-French Friendship Day and marks the first summit since the signing of an enhanced cooperation agreement between France and Poland in May 2025 in Nancy, Caliber.Az reports per Polish media

The agreement envisions expanded collaboration across a wide range of sectors, including security, defence industry cooperation, countering hybrid threats, as well as economic, agricultural, and scientific ties.

During the visit, Macron and Tusk are scheduled to take part in a ceremony at the French Military Cemetery in Gdańsk, where soldiers from Napoleon Bonaparte’s army are buried. The leaders will also hold bilateral talks in both restricted and expanded formats.

The agenda includes laying flowers at the Monument to the Shipbuilders of 1970 and a visit to the European Solidarity Centre, a key institution dedicated to the history of Poland’s Solidarity movement.

Discussions at the summit are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, European security, and transatlantic cooperation.
