Magnetic storms possible on July 20–21 amid solar activity

Solar flare activity is expected to remain mostly low on July 20 and 21, although M-class flares are possible, Russia’s Institute of Applied Geophysics told TASS.

Experts noted that M-class flares are the second-highest category of solar eruptions and may be accompanied by coronal mass ejections.

If such clouds of solar plasma reach Earth, they can trigger geomagnetic storms and disrupt the planet’s magnetic field.

Solar flares are classified according to the strength of their X-ray emissions into five categories: A, B, C, M and X, with X-class flares being the most powerful.
