Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Peru-Ecuador border

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 in magnitude struck near the border between Peru and Ecuador on June 13, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The quake occurred at 10:35 a.m. GMT+4 and had a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, GFZ reported.

Preliminary data placed the epicentre at 4.59 degrees south latitude and 80.02 degrees west longitude, in a region close to the Peru–Ecuador border.

The earthquake occurred in a seismically active area along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plate movements frequently generate earthquakes and volcanic activity.
