Magnitude 5.5 quake strikes off Oregon coast, no tsunami threat

29 June 2026 18:08

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon early June 29, but there is no tsunami threat, the National Weather Service said.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake occurred at 4:35 a.m. local time, approximately 175 miles southwest of Eugene, Oregon, at a depth of about 6 miles beneath the Pacific Ocean, Katu reports.

The quake struck within the Blanco Fracture Zone, a seismically active region where hundreds of earthquakes are recorded each year.

There have been no reports of the earthquake being felt by residents along Oregon's southern coast.
