Magnitude 6.6 earthquake strikes waters near New Caledonia

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck waters near the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia on September 26, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.21 miles), according to the USGS. The agency had initially recorded the quake at magnitude 7 and a depth of 17.1 kilometres, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

The US Tsunami Warning System said the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Hawaii, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands or American Samoa.
