Major fire erupts at landfill site in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region PHOTO / VIDEO

A fire has broken out at a landfill near Uzhhorod in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region, with emergency services involved in response efforts, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

“The fire occured in the village of Barvinok on the previous evening. Due to the rapid spread, additional firefighting units from nearby towns were deployed. During the night, the blaze was contained to an area of around 1,000 square meters,” the service said.

Specialists are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Authorities have advised residents of nearby settlements to keep windows closed until the fire is fully extinguished due to heavy smoke in the area.
