Malaysia ready to deploy peacekeepers in Palestine

02 July 2024 18:28

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed Malaysia’s readiness to collaborate with Indonesia on deploying peacekeeping forces to Palestine, contingent upon receiving a mandate from the United Nations (UN).

This proposal was a central topic in a phone conversation between Anwar and Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia's President-elect and Defence Minister. Anwar expressed his support for the idea of a Malaysia-Indonesia joint peacekeeping mission and highlighted the potential for expanding this collaboration to include the ASEAN region, Caliber.Az reports citing the prime minister’s message on X.

"In our brief conversation lasting about three minutes, we discussed various current topics, particularly Prabowo's recent international role representing Indonesia and his vision for regional and global cooperation and peace," Anwar shared in a Facebook post.

"Regarding the humanitarian situation in Palestine, I affirmed Malaysia's readiness to collaborate, including deploying peacekeeping forces alongside Indonesia, pending a UN mandate."

Anwar also expressed appreciation and conveyed well wishes for Prabowo's swift recovery after his recent successful major surgery.

"I also pray that Prabowo receives excellent care and treatment during his recovery and swiftly returns to his duties," Anwar stated.

Prabowo, elected President for the 2024-2029 term, underwent surgery to address injuries sustained during his military service. Anwar also expressed optimism for the upcoming Indonesian elections, culminating in the Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) on November 27.

"May all preparations for Prabowo's inauguration as President on October 20, 2024 proceed smoothly," added Anwar.
