Malta’s Labour Party makes history with fourth consecutive election win

31 May 2026 17:24

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that Malta’s Labour Party has secured a record fourth consecutive general election victory, retaining a parliamentary majority despite a reduced margin compared to the 2022 vote, Reuters reports.

While official results have yet to be published, the party confirmed it has retained control of parliament. In the previous election, Labour won 55% of the vote.

Abela described the result as a victory for the whole people, based on a programme for everyone, adding that the party has been given a “strong mandate” to govern.

Opposition Nationalist Party Secretary General Charles Bonello conceded defeat but noted that the gap between the two major parties has narrowed.

Turnout reached 87.4%, higher than in 2022. Labour’s campaign focused on economic performance and government stability, while the opposition argued that growth had not translated into improved living standards in the EU’s smallest member state.
