Man arrested with firearm near Trump's California golf course

05 August 2026 09:23

A man carrying a concealed firearm and prohibited ammunition was arrested near US President Donald Trump's golf course in Southern California days before the president's scheduled fundraising event there, authorities said.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele was detained on August 2 at Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes after plainclothes federal agents reported a suspicious person, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media

Investigators said Taele was "observed walking throughout the golf course grounds taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security-planning activities."

Authorities said Taele was carrying a concealed pistol and a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition. A search of his vehicle allegedly uncovered another loaded pistol and additional ammunition. California law prohibits magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.

The sheriff's department said Taele was also wanted in connection with a robbery investigation by the El Segundo Police Department.

A subsequent search of the suspect's home by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Major Crimes Bureau uncovered an "illegally modified AR platform rifle," a .45-calibre pistol, body armour, high-capacity magazines, ammunition and multiple notebooks "containing concerning statements."

The investigation is continuing with assistance from the U.S. Secret Service, and officials said additional charges may be filed.

The sheriff's department said it has not identified any "credible threat to our communities."

"However, this case underscores the importance of vigilance, strong partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and the proactive steps taken to identify and investigate suspicious activity before it can escalate," the statement added.

Trump was in California to attend a Republican fundraising dinner at the golf course on August 4. Officials have not said whether the suspect intended to harm the president, and he is not facing any charges related to such allegations.
