In a statement, Bahena’s political party, the Green Party, condemned the killing, expressing its “profound dismay” at his “cowardly murder” and calling on authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
Mexico has been gripped by drug-related violence for nearly two decades, with local politicians frequently targeted. Bahena’s killing follows a wave of similar attacks in recent months.
In June, gunmen stormed a mayor’s office in southern Mexico, killing the mayor and a staff member. Just a day later, another mayor in western Mexico was murdered along with her husband.
In a separate incident in May, two senior aides to Mexico City’s mayor were gunned down in the capital. Authorities have since arrested at least 13 suspects in connection with that case.
