Media: Around 100,000 Israelis stranded abroad due to flight cancellations

04 August 2024 10:57

Over 100,000 Israelis are unable to return home due to widespread flight cancellations amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Travelers have been advised to go to Greece or Cyprus, where they can transfer to flights to Israel from local airports, Caliber.Az reports citing the Russian media.

The national carrier, El Al, is still making its regular flights to Israel and will add five extra flights to its schedule to assist citizens in returning home.

Israel's Foreign Ministry has launched a special online service that allows individuals to report their location and receive further instructions on how to return home.

According to The Times of Israel, at least 18 international airlines have canceled flights to Tel Aviv. Among them are Aegean (Greece), Air Europa (Spain), Air India (India), Delta (USA), Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopia), Fly Dubai (UAE), Iberia Express (Spain), ITA (Italy), KLM (Netherlands), LOT (Poland), United Airlines (USA), Vueling (Spain), and Wizz Air (Hungary). Additionally, the German airline Lufthansa, along with its subsidiaries Swiss Air, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings, has also canceled flights to Israel.

The situation in the Middle East has sharply escalated in recent days following the death of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and the elimination of one of Hezbollah's military commanders, Fuad Shukr, in Beirut. Both Hamas and Hezbollah have blamed Israel for these incidents and have vowed to retaliate.

According to Axios, US and Israeli officials are uncertain whether Iran and the Shiite movement Hezbollah will carry out a joint operation. However, the sources think that an attack is anticipated on August 5.
