Media: Berlin skeptical as Hungary promises to host Putin for Trump talks
The German government has expressed skepticism regarding the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary, raising doubts about whether the talks will ultimately take place.
Berlin also clarified that the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant issued against Putin in 2023 is unlikely to be enforced in connection with the summit, emphasizing that the purpose of the meeting is to seek a peaceful resolution, Sky News reports.
Meanwhile, Hungary’s Foreign Minister has confirmed that the country will facilitate Putin’s entry for the summit with Trump.
Hungary’s unique geographic position adds complexity to the situation, as it is bordered by NATO member states Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, and Slovakia, as well as Serbia, Austria, and western Ukraine. Notably, all of Hungary’s neighboring countries, except Serbia, are signatories to the ICC, which issued the arrest warrant against Putin last year.
