Media: Decision on prospect of Türkiye-EU relations postponed until spring
The decision on the prospect of Türkiye's European integration has been postponed until the next EU summit, which is scheduled for March next year.
The leaders of the EU member states gave a positive assessment of the European Commission's report on Türkiye, which was announced in late November by the head of the EU foreign policy service Josep Borrel, in connection with which the opinion was expressed to consider it at the summit of the organization on March 21-22, the newspaper Milliyet reports, citing sources in Brussels.
The document on the state of Türkiye's political, economic and trade relations with the EU, prepared in accordance with the EU's assignment in June, is expected to be approved at the summit.
The EU summit on Dec. 14 decided to start accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, which could begin in March 2024. The summit also announced the granting of candidate status to Georgia and promised to revisit the issue of starting EU accession talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina in March.
Türkiye and EU accession talks were launched in 2005. To date, 16 out of 35 points of the so-called negotiation dossier have not been resolved. One of the stumbling blocks in the negotiation process is the Cyprus problem.
