UK unveils rapidly developed Gravehawk anti-aircraft system for Ukraine

21 January 2025 11:47

The United Kingdom has quickly developed a new anti-aircraft system, the Gravehawk, designed to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence.

Two prototypes of the system have already been tested, and London plans to send 15 Gravehawk units to Ukraine in the near future, Caliber.Az reports citing international media sources.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during a visit to Kyiv, confirmed that Ukraine would receive the Gravehawk system, which underwent testing in Ukraine in September 2024. "Two prototypes have been tested in Ukraine, and this year, we will deliver 15 systems," Starmer said. "The UK developed the Gravehawk rapidly to meet Ukraine’s urgent defence needs."

The Gravehawk, which is the size of a shipping container, offers a significant advantage by allowing the firing of air-to-air missiles from the ground. The system is also versatile in its ammunition use; it can launch not only Western-made missiles but also Ukrainian missiles already in the country’s arsenal, enhancing the flexibility of Ukraine's armed forces.

The announcement follows the signing of a centenary partnership agreement between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Starmer. This agreement strengthens defence cooperation between the two nations and ensures continued UK military support for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy expressed the significance of the agreement, stating, "We have reached a new level, it is more than a strategic partnership. We have signed a centenary partnership agreement."
