Hungarian PM declares end of Western-dominated world order, foresees rise of East, Asia

20 January 2025 21:06

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has asserted that the existing global order is nearing its conclusion, with a new model of world governance set to emerge in the coming decades.

Speaking at a conference in Budapest on the results of Hungary's presidency of the Council of the  European Union in the second half of 2024, Orban emphasized that the power dynamics of the world are shifting towards the East and Asia, marking the end of the West-dominated world order that has shaped global affairs for centuries, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

"We are living in a period of changing world order, in the years of the rise of the East and Asia. The world order as we have known it until now is coming to an end," Orban stated.

He pointed out that this transition marks the decline of a world order shaped by the West, particularly the Anglo-Saxons, and that the emerging global powers are now laying the foundations for a new economic, political, and cultural framework that will dominate for decades.

Orban further explained that major global powers are preparing for a new era, actively working to create new geopolitical structures that will safeguard their security interests. He referred to ongoing conflicts and international issues, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, which he argued is rooted in Ukraine's potential NATO membership—a move opposed by Russia at all costs. He also pointed to the growing strategic importance of regions like Greenland, Canada, Panama, the South China Sea, and Taiwan in global politics.

He highlighted the widespread debates taking place around the world, emphasizing the struggle for a new world order that touches on state structures, economies, and national identities. Orban stated that the Western model of liberal democracy has already failed, succumbing to the weight of its own mistakes, and is increasingly working against the interests of Western countries themselves.

Orban’s remarks come amid broader discussions of a shifting global balance of power, as emerging economies in Asia, particularly China, continue to assert their influence on the world stage.
