Mexico launches program for migrants facing deportation from US

21 January 2025 10:32

Mexico has announced the launch of a program aimed at welcoming migrants who may face deportation from the United States following the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The initiative, called "Mexico Embraces You," was unveiled by Mexico's Interior Minister, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, during a press briefing held by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

In her statement, Rodríguez emphasized that the Mexican government has prepared an effective strategy to support its citizens who may be repatriated from the U.S.

"Mexico will do everything necessary to protect and welcome those who are repatriated so that they can achieve their reunification in their country of origin," she said.

Rodríguez explained that the government began preparations immediately after Trump announced plans for mass deportations of migrants.

“Of course, we disagree with this, but if it happens, we will ensure access to social welfare programs, healthcare services for them and their families, transportation to their places of origin, and access to telephone services,” she added.

Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump, in his inaugural speech delivered in the central hall of Congress on January 20, declared that he would issue an executive order declaring a state of emergency over the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border, and would deploy military forces to the area.

Trump plans to resume the construction of the border wall, end the practice of granting humanitarian parole to migrants—initiated by the previous administration of Joe Biden—and reinstate the "Remain in Mexico" policy, which requires migrants to wait outside the U.S. while their asylum cases are processed. These measures are aimed at strengthening border control and combating international criminal organizations.
